  • Designed by Willie G. Davidson, to appeal to the sport bike crowd of the era.
  • Its styling was more exciting than its performance. As for its looks, the almost all black theme of the bike really connected with potential buyers.
  • The bikini fairing, flat track style seat, triple disk brakes and Morris aluminum mag wheels looked the part of high performance. The frame was unique also, using the front part from the Sportster, and the rear modified with tubes, similar to the XR-750 race bike.
  • The engine was the same iron head 1000cc, pushrod unit with a 4 speed transmission, as found in the standard Sportster. Even the unique Siamese headers did little for additional power.
  • From a sales standpoint, the bike never really made it. The problem was likely that the potential buyers who got to the showroom based on its appearance, quickly surmised that a less expensive Japanese machine gave much better performance.
  • 1923 were produced in 1977, 1201 in 1978 and only 9 in 1979.
  • Today, it is highly collectible, and although a Ducati or Moto Guzzi from this era rides better, the XLCR has a strong following among enthusiasts, and not just Harley loyalists. This particular bike is completely stock, with very low mileage, and was given a cosmetic restoration by Joe’s garage.
