  • In 1988, Ducati decided to get serious about superbike racing again, and the 851 was developed. World Superbike rules at the time, stated that a twin cylinder bike could have an engine capacity of 851cc’s when placed in the same class as the 750cc four cylinder Japanese bikes.
  • So Ducati used much of the design from the Form Racing Cosworth V8, and developed a 4 valve , desmodromic gear actuated valve train engine capable of reliable high rpm’s, and potentially similar horsepower as a 4 cylinder engine. Some say it is essentially one fourth of the V8, especially the head design. The result was a racing engine that produced well over 120 horsepower, and coupled with its lighter weight in a trellis framed superbike, Ducati went on to win multiple World championships.
  • This 1991 model was the first year Ducati incorporated Showa inverted front forks. it is the ‘Bi Posto’ model , meaning two passenger, with the rear seat hidden under a plastic cowling.
